ELECTRODIAGNOSTIC TESTING (EMGs)
by Howard Liss, MD and Donald Liss, MD

Ordering the EMG

It is most important to provide a brief clinical background and your goal in ordering the test, e.g., rule out left cervical radiculopathy, or differentiate left peroneal neuropathy from left L5 radiculopathy.

It is not necessary to state which extremities to test. The electromyographer is in the best position to determine this from the clinical background and data obtained during the procedure.

Consider the timing of the study in light of the known limitations of the electromyographic portion of the test.

Kindly advise the patient or a responsible party to avoid skin lotions on the day of the EMG.

I hope the above comments are helpful in allowing you to better utilize electrodiagnostic testing. Please do not hesitate to call if you have comments or questions.
